Industrial Salt
NaCl — 96–99.5%
Sodium chloride in the grades industry buys rather than the grade a kitchen buys: road de-icing, water softening, chlor-alkali feedstock and a long tail of process uses.
Grade selection is mostly about insolubles and about sizing. De-icing salt tolerates a coarse, impure product; water treatment and chemical feedstock do not, and paying for the wrong one in either direction is expensive.
Specification

- Moisture
- 0.5–3.0% depending on grade
- Water-insoluble matter
- 0.05% max (chemical) to 2.0% max (de-icing)
- Calcium and magnesium
- Per grade — critical for water treatment use
- Granulometry
- 0.2–6 mm depending on grade
- Bulk density
- 1.10–1.30 t/m³
- CAS number
- 7647-14-5
- HS code
- 2501 00
- Transport status
- Not classified as a dangerous good
Classification, HS code and transport regime are confirmed per grade and per route at the offer stage. Figures below are indicative of the standard specification.
Packaging
- Bulk, in holds, hopper wagons and tippers
- Big bag 1000 / 1250 kg
- PP bags 25 kg for water treatment grades
Storage and handling
- Covered storage preferred; de-icing grade tolerates open stockpiling under sheet
- Highly corrosive to unprotected steel when damp — protect handling equipment
- Cakes under humidity cycling; break-out equipment may be needed after long storage
Transport
- Unregulated for transport by road, rail and sea
- Corrosion protection for equipment matters more than cargo protection
Documents
- Technical data sheet (TDS) — issued with the offer
- Safety data sheet (SDS) in the languages of transit and destination
- Certificate of analysis, lot-specific, drawn at loading
- Certificate of origin and EUR.1 where the destination allows preference
Documents are issued against a confirmed enquiry rather than published for download — an SDS is only meaningful for the grade and revision actually shipped.
