Ammonium Nitrate
NH₄NO₃ — 34.4% N, prilled or granular
The fastest-acting straight nitrogen in common use: half the nitrogen is immediately available as nitrate, half follows as the ammonium fraction nitrifies. That split is why it is the preferred top dressing where the crop needs nitrogen now rather than over the following month.
It is also an oxidiser. Above the exemption thresholds it moves as a Class 5.1 dangerous good, it must be kept away from combustible material and heat, and in several jurisdictions its sale is recorded. None of that is difficult, but it has to be planned rather than assumed.

Storage and handling
- Dry, covered, ventilated storage away from direct sunlight and heat sources
- Segregate from combustible material, fuels, oils, acids, chlorates and organic matter
- Do not stack against timber or bituminous surfaces; keep stack heights within local limits
- Shelf life indefinite in sealed packaging under dry conditions; caking risk rises with humidity cycling
Transport
- Road under ADR, rail under RID, sea under IMDG — Class 5.1 above the exemption thresholds
- Covered equipment only; open tippers are not acceptable for the packaged grade
- Previous cargo history required for bulk holds and containers
- Security provisions apply in several jurisdictions; end-use information may be requested

- Technical data sheet (TDS) — issued with the offer
- Safety data sheet (SDS) in the languages of transit and destination
- Certificate of analysis, lot-specific, drawn at loading
- Certificate of origin and EUR.1 where the destination allows preference
Documents are issued against a confirmed enquiry rather than published for download — an SDS is only meaningful for the grade and revision actually shipped.
