Nitrogen fertilizers
Straight nitrogen in solid and liquid form — the volume backbone of most arable nutrition plans.
Nitrogen is the largest single line in most arable programmes and the one most sensitive to timing, because it is the nutrient most easily lost between application and uptake.
The choice between grades is usually a choice about release behaviour, handling and the transport regime that comes with it. Urea carries the most nitrogen per tonne and the fewest transport restrictions; ammonium nitrate acts faster but is an oxidiser in transport; UAN removes the handling problem entirely at the cost of needing tanks.

Ammonium Nitrate
NH₄NO₃ — 34.4% N, prilled or granular
The fastest-acting straight nitrogen in common use: half the nitrogen is immediately available as nitrate, half follows as the ammonium fraction nitrifies. That split is why it is the preferred top dressing where the crop needs nitrogen now rather than over the following month.
Specification ↗Calcium Ammonium Nitrate
CAN — 27% N with calcium carbonate
CAN is ammonium nitrate diluted with ground limestone or dolomite. The nitrogen behaves much like AN, but the inert filler brings the concentration down to around 27 percent and, at that level, the material generally falls outside the Class 5.1 dangerous goods rules.
Specification ↗Urea, prilled
CO(NH₂)₂ — 46% N
The highest nitrogen concentration available in a solid fertilizer, and the simplest to move: urea is not a dangerous good, which removes ADR, RID and IMDG from the equation entirely.
Specification ↗Urea, granular
CO(NH₂)₂ — 46% N
The same chemistry as prilled urea in a larger, harder granule. The difference is mechanical: granular material survives handling better and spreads accurately at the wide bout widths modern equipment uses.
Specification ↗UAN Solution
Urea ammonium nitrate — 32, 30 or 28% N
A solution of urea and ammonium nitrate in water, carrying three forms of nitrogen at once: nitrate for immediate uptake, ammonium for the following weeks, and amide behind that. Applied as a liquid, it removes spreading accuracy from the list of things that can go wrong.
Specification ↗Ammonium Sulphate
(NH₄)₂SO₄ — 21% N, 24% S
Two nutrients in one salt: ammonium nitrogen and a large sulphur contribution. Since sulphur deposition from the atmosphere collapsed across Europe, sulphur deficiency has become a routine problem rather than an exotic one, and AS is the cheapest way to address it while applying nitrogen anyway.
Specification ↗Anhydrous Ammonia
NH₃ — 99.6% min
The most concentrated nitrogen there is at 82 percent, and the feedstock from which most of the rest of this catalogue is manufactured. Applied directly, it is injected below the soil surface, where it binds to soil moisture and stays put.
