Stainless steel process tanks and pipework at a chemical storage facility.

Industrial chemicals

Nitric Acid, non-concentrated

HNO₃ — 56–60%

The workhorse concentration, used to make ammonium nitrate and calcium nitrate and as an intermediate across the chemical industry. At 56 to 60 percent it is corrosive but not oxidising in the way the concentrated grade is, which simplifies both equipment and transport.

It attacks most metals and organic material on contact. Equipment selection is the whole of the handling question: austenitic stainless steel or approved lining, nothing else.

Classification, HS code and transport regime are confirmed per grade and per route at the offer stage. Figures below are indicative of the standard specification.

Packaging

  • Lined rail tank wagons
  • ISO tanks of about 21–26 m³
  • Road tankers in dedicated lined equipment

Storage and handling

  • Austenitic stainless steel or approved lined tanks; vented and bunded
  • Segregate absolutely from alkalis, organic material, metals in powder form and reducing agents
  • Store away from direct sunlight — decomposition produces nitrogen oxides and pressure
  • Full personal protective equipment and emergency shower at every transfer point

Transport

  • ADR, RID and IMDG Class 8, packing group II
  • Dedicated lined equipment with previous cargo history documented
  • DGSA oversight; written instructions and safety data sheet in the languages of the route

Documents

  • Technical data sheet (TDS) — issued with the offer
  • Safety data sheet (SDS) in the languages of transit and destination
  • Certificate of analysis, lot-specific, drawn at loading
  • Certificate of origin and EUR.1 where the destination allows preference

Documents are issued against a confirmed enquiry rather than published for download — an SDS is only meaningful for the grade and revision actually shipped.
