Calcium Ammonium Nitrate
CAN — 27% N with calcium carbonate
CAN is ammonium nitrate diluted with ground limestone or dolomite. The nitrogen behaves much like AN, but the inert filler brings the concentration down to around 27 percent and, at that level, the material generally falls outside the Class 5.1 dangerous goods rules.
For most European buyers that is the entire argument: nearly the same agronomic behaviour, materially simpler storage and transport, plus a calcium contribution that suits soils where acidification is a concern.
Specification
Technical data

- Off-white to light brown granules
- Total nitrogen
- 27% min (nitrate and ammonium in roughly equal parts)
- Calcium
- As CaCO₃ or dolomite filler, typically 6–8% Ca
- Moisture
- 0.5% max
- Granulometry
- 2–5 mm, 90% min
- Bulk density
- 0.95–1.05 t/m³
- Anti-caking
- Surface-coated
- HS code
- 3102 40
- Transport status
- Below 28% N usually not classified; confirmed per grade
Classification, HS code and transport regime are confirmed per grade and per route at the offer stage. Figures below are indicative of the standard specification.
Packaging
- Bulk, in covered equipment
- Big bag 500 / 1000 / 1250 kg
- PP bags 25 and 50 kg, palletised and hooded
Storage and handling
- Dry, covered storage; hygroscopic and will cake if humidity is allowed to cycle
- Segregate from acids and from combustible material as a matter of good practice
- Keep packaging sealed until application; opened big bags degrade quickly outdoors
Transport
- Generally moves as ordinary cargo below 28% N — confirmed against the exact grade
- Covered road, rail and sea equipment; protect from rain during handling
- Where a grade exceeds the threshold, ADR / RID / IMDG Class 5.1 applies
Documents
- Technical data sheet (TDS) — issued with the offer
- Safety data sheet (SDS) in the languages of transit and destination
- Certificate of analysis, lot-specific, drawn at loading
- Certificate of origin and EUR.1 where the destination allows preference
Documents are issued against a confirmed enquiry rather than published for download — an SDS is only meaningful for the grade and revision actually shipped.
